Objectives: The course aims at offering a general guidance to the Greek and Latin manuscript production and to the means by which scientific research is carried out in libraries and Roman archives.

The course is planned for students and for all those who are interested in Italian and particularly Roman culture.

The course will consist of seminars. Lectures will be held in the Faculty of Arts, in the libraries and archives of Rome: Biblioteca Nazionale, Biblioteca Angelica, Biblioteca Casanatense, Biblioteca Vallicelliana, Biblioteca Corsiniana, the Library of the Greek College of St. Atanasio, Archivio di Stato, Archivio Aldobrandini in Frascati, the Archive and Library of the Greek Monastery of Santa Maria of Grottaferrata (Abbey of St. Nilo). At least one visit to the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana is one schedule.

Contents: The course will consist of lectures held by scholars and experts in History of Greek and Latin writing, History of Greek and Latin documentation, ‘Archeology’ of the manuscript book, general information on the ‘history’ of the libraries and archives of Rome and surrounding area (Frascati and Grottaferrata).

 

Teaching staff: The lectures of History of Greek and Latin writing and of History of Greek and Latin Documentation will be held by Professors V. von Falkenhausen, V. De Donato, S. Lucą, A. Ciaralli, V. Matera; those of "Archaeology" of the manuscript book by Professors S. Lucą, A. Ciaralli; those of the Libraries and the Archives by Professors V. von Falkenhausen, V. Matera.
