Literary walks in Rome

Objectives: The Course, given in Italian and intended for foreign students having sufficient knowledge of the language, will examine significant authors, themes and motifs in Italian literature from its beginnings to the present, with emphasis on the relationship between a number of major Italian writers and the city of Rome, as revealed in their lives and works.

Contents: Possible topics might include, depending also on the needs and interests of the students:

• Dante, Petrarch and Boccaccio in Rome;

• Renaissance literature in Rome;

• European Romanticism in Rome;

• Italian "Novecento": poetry, prose and cinema of the late 20th Century in Rome.

There will also be lectures on the relationship between literature and cinema, and course-related "literary tours" of the city.

Teaching staff: The lectures will be delivered by Dr. Rino Caputo, lecturer in Literary Theory, and Dr. Carmine Chiodo, lecturer in Modern and Contemporary Italian Literature, assisted by Dr. Fabrizio Natalini, specialised in intertextual relations between literature and cinema, Dr. Florinda Nardi, now preparing her doctoral degree in Italian Literature at the University of Rome "La Sapienza", and Sabrina Ferri, graduated from the "Scuola Superiore per Interpreti e Traduttori" of Rome, now graduating in Literary Theory.
