The goal of the PhD program in Molecular and Cellular Biology is the training of independent scientists with broad biological culture and prepared to solve basic problems in Cellular and Molecular Biology. The focus of the program is on model driven rather than data driven research. However, the students are encouraged and trained to make use of large data bases to harvest the wealth of information that is being accumulated by the Genomic Projects and to use this information to test their models and to interpret their experimental results.

The scope of the training is at the same time broad, from the cultural point of view, and focussed in the thesis work. At the beginning of the program the students discuss and choose a project and, once approved, the majority of the time is dedicated to experimental work.

The bench work is accompanied by seminar activities where students discuss the advancement of their research and review recent literature.

PhD is granted after a minimum of three years and after the student has demonstrated the achievement of competitive results as judged by publications on peer reviewed international journals in the field of molecular and cellular biology.
