Ph.D in Roman Law and the Unification of Legal Systems

The Ph.D program in “Roman Law and the Unification of Legal Systems” aims to provide a comprehensive and detailed overview of Roman Law with reference to the current unification trend of the legal systems of several countries.

It promotes and offers guidance to research on the development of these principles when this system was being developed until its codification by Justinian, and its later development when Roman Law and Medieval legal institutions co-existed, especially in the age of great revolutions with modern and contemporary codification. This issue will be related to the renewal of Roman Law that can be traced in the current trends to unification of the legal systems as a consequence of integration processes among different countries, focussing on the comparison between European and South American experiences.

Within this framework, this research-doctorate has two further lines: one centred on the meeting between Roman Law and Muslim legal system and another one on the reception of Roman Law in China.
