Program of study
The
Doctoral program in “Building Engineering: Architecture and Construction”
is one of the strongest training programs offered at Tor Vergata University.
The Doctoral Degree aims to give advanced instruction in the field of
analysis of traditional and modern constructive techniques, which are
examined with the goal of warranting the conservation and the restoration
project of the most representative architecture.
The researchers of the department, in partnership with
public research associations in Italy and in other countries, are leading
studies about evolution of construction technologies. These studies
have received important recognition as programs worth of national interest
and have been financed with PRIN funds.
Research
The Doctoral
program is well-rounded so to provide students with a series of upgraded
training opportunities and specific cycles of seminaries, which can
be selected to define the individual program of study.
The program can be divided in the following thematic sections:
-Analysis of historical and traditional buildings or architectonical
complexes, chosen for being examples of the relationship between architectonical
solution and applied techniques;
-History of peculiar building technologies and of their influence on
architectural language;
-Executive design, aimed at the conservation of historical and modern
architecture, using specific building techniques.
Students can attend other seminars or courses, belonging
to Doctoral programs and Masters in fields related the program, that
are judged useful by the Board of Professors.
Each student is helped by a tutor in writing his personal program of
study, above all in choosing integrative formative activities (stages,
times of probation, etc…).
Curriculum
The structure and curriculum
of the Doctoral program seeks to provide students with the skills needed
to conduct high-level research activities in Universities, public agencies
or private institutions. During their triennial activity, students develop
an original research project, independently and with innovative contents.
In agreement with the tutor, every student defines a
research project, plans phases of development and specifies the center
where research activity will take place.
Twice a year, students must present a report of their personal work
to the Board of Professors, to verify level of knowledge which has been
reached.
The analysis of architecture and the history of building technologies
will begin after an exam on the present condition of acquaintances,
through the available international issues, archive documents recovery,
direct survey of architectural works, analytic re-drawing of the most
important parts of the works themselves.
The results of the students’ activities are systematically
shown by the students themselves during national and international scientific
meetings and when published in scientific issues.
Admission
Students
who are interested in the Doctoral program should contact the research
group they would like to join before the deadline of the official application.
Applicants are expected to have obtained a second level degree in Engineering
or Architecture (4/S class).
