Our Ph.D. program in Mathematics aims to form experts in the most important
fields of
pure and applied mathematics, namely:
- Operators algebra and their applications;
- Harmonic analysis, integral geometry, Markov chains;
- Differential equations and control theory;
- Variational and topological methods in non-linear analysis;
- Non-linear equations depending on parameters;
- Algorithms in numerical mathematics and computer science;
- Statistical mechanics, dynamical systems, hydrodynamics, general relativity;
- Algebra, geometry, complex analysis, Lie groups;
- Probability theory, stochastic processes, statistics;
Our Ph.D. graduates have acquired competencies both to continue their
activity in research, and to cover high rank positions in public or
private enterprises, companies and firms (such as banks, insurance companies,
electronic, mechanical firms, etc.).
We offer our graduate students a series of high level courses on selected
topics and a vast choice of seminar cycles. An individual path will
be organized by a personal selection of topics and seminars, the choice
being supervised by a tutor and by the Ph.D. Board of Professors. Special
courses are organized to complete the educational background of the
students, and occasionally they can also take some advanced undergraduate
courses.
The Ph.D. students can also be involved, with the approval of the Ph.D.
committee, in other courses, seminars, conferences and masters organized
by other universities.
Cycles of seminars addressed to our Ph.D. students are mainly organized
within the Faculty, although they are often followed by researchers
from Italian and foreign Universities that have collaborations with
our Mathematics Department.
Each Ph.D. student has a tutor, supervising his individual project and
the courses and seminars he/she must attend in order to complete his/her
background.
Each Ph.D. student, at the end of his/her three year activity, has to
complete an individual research project, that should be original and
contain new results within his/her chosen field. The choice of the subject
and the different stages of its development should be decided by the
Ph.D. student with the help and the advice of his/her tutor.
At the end of each academic year, the Ph.D. student presents a written
report on his/her activities and has an interview with a commission
chosen by the Ph.D. committee to check the progress of his/her research
and of his/her knowledge.
During the three years of study, the Ph.D. students can publish papers
containing results that will eventually be part of their Ph.D. Thesis
and present them in national and international seminars and conferences.
According to the suggestions and the guidelines proposed by the state,
concerning international collaborations, our program welcomes foreign
students. In the last cycles we have had students from Iraq, China,
Romania and a student in partnership with a French Ph.D. program.
