UNIVERSITY OF ROME “TOR VERGATA”
GRADUATE SCHOOL POLICIES

The Graduate School is an interdepartmental center, which provides basic services to all Doctoral programs, fully respecting their freedom of initiative.

In particular, the Graduate School promotes:
  • scientific, cultural and social activities in order to increase the effectiveness of each Doctoral program;
  • collaboration between the Doctoral programs of Tor Vergata University;
  • interdisciplinary initiatives;
  • collaboration with other universities, agencies, institutions and research centers;
  • contacts with public agencies and the business world in order to foster research opportunities and improve the resources available.

The University provides the Graduate School with the financing, logistics and personnel necessary to run effectively. The management of the School’s finances is carried out by the University’s central administration.

The Graduate School is composed of a President, a School Council, an Executive Committee and a Scientific Committee.

The School President is chosen by the School Council among the University’s full professors and is appointed by the University Chancellor. The School President is appointed for three years and can be re-appointed for another term, not necessarily consecutive.

The President coordinates the School’s activities, represents the School, presides over the Council and the Executive Committee, and sees to it that the Council’s decisions are carried out. The President may also appoint a Vice-President, from the members of the Executive Committee, who will take his/her place in the case of his/her absence.

The Graduate School Council is composed of:
  • the President of the Graduate School;
  • the coordinators of the University’s Doctoral programs;
  • six Doctoral students, who are elected by the representatives of Doctoral students in the University’s Departmental Councils in order to secure a representative from each Faculty. These six students are given a two-year appointment and cannot be re-elected.

The President of the Graduate School summons the Council at least twice a year. The Council:

  • provides guidelines for Graduate School activity, while respecting the freedom of initiative of each Doctoral program;
  • elects the Executive Committee;
  • authorizes the annual report prepared by the Executive Committee.

The Executive Committee is composed of the President of the Graduate School and six representatives elected by the Graduate School Council in order to secure one representative from each Faculty. The members of the Executive Committee are appointed for three years and can be re-appointed for another term, not necessarily consecutive.

The Executive Committee is responsible for managing the School. In particular:

  • it promotes partnerships between the University’s Doctoral programs and external centers and consortiums;
  • it issues the announcement for each Doctoral cycle, including deadlines and eventual waivers, keeping in mind the needs of each Doctoral program;
  • it proposes to the Academic Senate the allocation of scholarships to each Doctoral program;
  • it proposes to the Academic Senate the allocation of management funds to each Doctoral programs;
  • it presents the Academic Senate with an annual report regarding the establishment, renewal and interruption of Doctoral programs;
  • it organizes help services for students and Professors.

The evaluation of the Graduate School is carried out by a Scientific Committee composed of five eminent experts, not from the University of Rome “Tor Vergata”, who are nominated by the Academic Senate and appointed by the University Chancellor.

The Scientific Committee presents an annual report to the Academic Senate. The members of the Scientific Committee are appointed for three years without the possibility of renewal.

All University Doctoral students can participate in the School’s interdisciplinary and extracurricular activities, and can propose, through their student representatives, initiatives consistent with the School’s aims.
